The Connection I Almost Missed

There were hundreds of people filing into the conference ballroom that morning.

Conversations buzzing.
Name badges swinging.
That familiar energy of people finding their seats, greeting colleagues, settling in for the day.

And then… I saw them.

Two women. Big smiles. Familiar faces… but from a lifetime ago.

My college roommates.

Women I hadn’t seen in 40 years.

Forty.

And yet somehow, in that moment, I would have known them anywhere.

Later that day, I drove back with them to their hometown, and we spent the weekend together.

Hours of talking.
Laughing until we couldn’t breathe.
Telling stories we hadn’t thought about in decades.

And what struck me most wasn’t just the joy…

It was how easy it felt.

Like we hadn’t missed a beat.
Like the connection had been there all along… just waiting for us to pick it back up again.

When I left, my heart felt so full.

Grounded.
Connected.
Happy in that deep, settled way that doesn’t come from achievement—but from people.

And I kept thinking…

This almost didn’t happen.

Because connection always comes with a little bit of risk.

They could have thought, “Eh, it’s been too long.”

I could have thought, “We probably won’t have that much to talk about. Our lives are so different now.”

Any one of us could have decided it wasn’t worth the effort.

But instead… someone reached out.

And everything shifted because of it.

And here’s what I want to gently offer you…

This isn’t just about reconnecting after 40 years.

This is about the everyday moments where connection is quietly available to us—and we walk right past it.

You go to a conference.

You sit down next to someone.
You exchange a polite smile… and then look at your phone.

You attend a workshop.
You notice someone who seems kind, interesting, familiar…
But you don’t say anything.

You stand in line for coffee.
You feel that small nudge to start a conversation…
And then talk yourself out of it.

But what if…

The person sitting next to you is someone who could change your life?

A future collaborator.
A lifelong friend.
Someone who understands you in a way you didn’t even realize you needed.

We tend to think connection has to be big to matter.

But most of the time, it starts small.

A simple question.
A shared laugh.
A moment of genuine curiosity.

That’s it.

That’s the doorway.

The next time you’re at an event—even if it’s just for a day or two—try this:

Instead of staying in your own lane…

Reach one step further.

Turn to the person next to you and ask something a little more meaningful than,
“What do you do?”

Try:

  • “What brought you here?”
  • “What’s been the best part of today so far?”
  • “What are you hoping to walk away with?”

And then… really listen. If you want to go even deeper, this is where your connection builder questions can completely shift a conversation.

Because connection isn’t about being impressive.

It’s about being present.

And often, it starts with a small shift in your energy—something as simple as putting your phone down, making eye contact, and choosing to engage.

I almost missed a weekend that filled my heart in a way I didn’t even know I needed.

All because someone took a small risk to reach out.

And here’s what I know for sure:

That kind of connection isn’t rare.

But it does require one brave, simple step.

So the next time you feel that nudge…

Follow it.

Say hello.
Ask the question.
Start the conversation.

Because the person who might bring unexpected joy into your life…

Could be sitting right beside you.
